He has now been in the hospital for two weeks. He has a feeding tube and oxygen. He can barely cough, but when he does you can hear the fluid in his lungs.

He has a fever but they can’t find an infection, bp is consistently high and he can’t move his head or right arm at all. They ran a test for stroke that came back negative.

He seems to be going downhill pretty quickly and the doctors say that they can’t do anything for him.

We are at a loss.

He knows we are there and tries to respond but can’t get any words out.

We asked him if he wanted to stop the feeding tube and the oxygen mask because his wishes are not to be kept alive by machines if he had no quality of life. He was able to say NO!

The family does not have the money for private care.

Does Medicare cover anything for home health care? We keep getting the run around from the caseworker.

Need to have hospice come in and do an assessment. Also, does he have a living trust and will? What are his end of life wishes?
My experience: When my daddy fell, 11 months before he died, he could not move, or get up. I had to call 911. He was in the hospital for about 4 days then moved to a "rehab" (nursing home) I located the social worker and they turned me over to a caseworker (who was a great person). I informed her I know nothing about medicare and she took my hand and walked me through everything. All this to say, if you can find another case worker that will hold your hand. Do not back down. Blessings to you and know I am sending a cyber hug to you! <3

Any visiting care will not be 24/7...just a visit. It is too soon to say where he will go but being non moble means he is bedridden. He may stay at the hospital for a while to figure what is happening and he may pass away while there. Talk to the social worker about his financial status. It sounds like hospice is the way to go. It sounds like he is OK with oxygen, You might want to bring all financials to an elder lawyer to see when and if he is Medicaid eligible for a nursing home. That includes nursing home with hospice but it will depend where beds are available
