The soonest wait is 6 mos. She has been in and out of the hospital frequently since November due to cardiac and renal issues and the falls. She's fallen twice in two weeks and last Saturday, spent the night on the floor until she could crawl to the phone. The fire department had to break in because my husband and I were 4 hours away. The last time she was in the hospital over Christmas and then they put her in a rehab facility for 3 weeks (that's all Medicare and Medicaid would pay for) then discharged her to home. She won't wear an emergency button and she can't come and live in our quad. We both work and can't take care of her full time plus there is nowhere at her place for someone else to sleep unless it's on the floor. She keeps messing up her meds. We just don't know what to do when she's released again, until we can get her into another facility (if she lasts that long without a serious incident).

Find Care & Housing
The easiest way is to get them in is under private pay for at least two years. You do this by contributing her SS, VA Aid & Attendance, and selling her house, cashing in life insurance and emptying savings. You need a facility that will transition to Medicaid when the money is less than $2K.

All we have is her SS. She had to sell her condo years ago when she was running out of money. She never worked and her husband died at 54. She has no life insurance and very little in savings.

Was her husband a WWII vet? There would be VA aid for her if he was.

Dsmartin, you need to immediately check with your county's department of human services, and get them involved. They can and will find a place for her at some type of residential care facility, OR, they can arrange for in-home care in some states, until there is a bed available in a facility. She will need to spend-down and her SS check will be applied to the facility too.
The sooner you get in contact with the county, the sooner they can get help for your MIL. Best wishes on this journey.

Her husband was a WWII vet but unfortunately she remarried out of convenience (family friends: the 2 couples spent a lot of time together and then her husband died and his wife died. They lived in separate apartments and spent so much time together, they decided to get a 2 bedroom to save money. She wouldn't live in the same apartment unless they married). Vets told me she no longer qualifies because she remarried.

Thank you, Grace. It appears there is a facility with a 2-3 day waiting list that she qualifies for. The hospital unfortunately discharged her to a "rehab" facility that I am familiar with (14 years as an EMS provider) that is horrible. She spent last night there and couldn't sleep. 2 strangers "sneaked" into her room but when they realized she was awake and coherent, left without saying a word (she has no valuables with her, fortunately). Other patients are often yelling out and the stench is terrible. We are praying that this other facility will take her by Friday.
